HOYA CRASSIPETIOLATA 'SUPER SPLASH'
Once mature, these plants will develop beautiful clusters of fragrant star-shaped flowers.
Botanical Name: Hoya crassipetiolata
Common Name: wax plant
Family: Apocynaceae
Native to: Latin America, Asia, Australia and other sub-tropical areas.
*This plant is not considered toxic. However, hoyas have sap that may trigger a reaction with people that have latex allergies.
Light
Hoya crassipetiolata thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct morning sunlight but should be protected from harsh midday sun, which can cause leaf scorch. Light intensity directly impacts its growth and flowering.
Water
Allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, a common issue with Hoyas. The plant prefers to be on the drier side rather than consistently wet. During the winter months, reduce watering frequency as the plant’s growth slows down.
Tips
- This species prefers temperatures between 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F). It is sensitive to cold temperatures and should be kept in a warm environment. Avoid temperatures below 15°C (59°F) as this can stress the plant and inhibit growth.
- Hoyas will produce clusters of star-shaped flowers. Don't cut the flower stem once the flowers are spent. Leave them as this is where the plant will flower from in the future! Do not attempt to move your hoya once in bloom, they are sensitive to change during this time and might drop the flowers.
- Fertilize once a month during the spring and summer or with every watering using a diluted liquid fertilizer. Dilute based on frequency and the instructions of the fertilizer being used. Orchid fertilizer can also be used for Hoyas.
- Hoya love a humid environment, especially during the winter when the air is drier. Ideal humidity is between 60% and 80%. In lower humidity environments, adding a humidfier or the use of a humidity tray can help maintain the required moisture levels.
Toxicity
This plant is not considered toxic to pets or people but may cause a reaction in folks who have a latex allergy.
