HOYA MULTIFLORA (OUTER VAR)
Once mature, these plants will develop beautiful clusters of fragrant star-shaped flowers.
Botanical Name: Hoya multiflora
Common Name: wax plant
Family: Apocynaceae
Origin: Cultivar of Hoya multiflora, which is native to Southeast Asia. Specifically, Hoya multiflora is indigenous to regions including: Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines.
*This plant is not considered toxic. However, hoyas have sap that may trigger a reaction with people that have latex allergies.
Light
Provide bright, indirect light. Variegated Hoyas often require more light than their non-variegated counterparts to maintain their vibrant coloration and encourage flowering. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Position the plant near a window with filtered light or under grow lights if natural light is insufficient. Inadequate light can lead to diminished variegation and reduced flowering.
Water
Allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, especially in variegated cultivars which might be more sensitive. Water the plant when the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry.
Tips
- Maintain temperatures between 18°C to 27°C (65°F to 80°F). The plant is sensitive to cold and should be kept away from temperatures below 15°C (59°F). Cold drafts can cause stress and affect growth.
- Hoyas will produce clusters of star-shaped flowers. Don't cut the flower stem once the flowers are spent. Leave them as this is where the plant will flower from in the future! Do not attempt to move your hoya once in bloom, they are sensitive to change during this time and might drop the flowers.
- Fertilize once a month during the spring and summer or with every watering using a diluted liquid fertilizer. Dilute based on frequency and the instructions of the fertilizer being used. Orchid fertilizer can also be used for Hoyas.
- High humidity is crucial, ideally between 60% to 80%. Variegated plants, like Hoya multiflora 'Outer Variegated', benefit from increased humidity to support their unique leaf patterns. Use a humidity tray, pebble tray, or a humidifier to maintain proper humidity levels.
Toxicity
This plant is not considered toxic to pets or people but may cause a reaction in folks who have a latex allergy.
